About MLPNA

The Michigan Licensed Practical Nurses Association is a professional association in Michigan offering membership to licensed practical nurses, student practical nurses, other interested individuals or healthcare groups & facilities employing LPNs.

MLPNA was founded in 1944 and was instrumental in gaining licensure for the practical nurse as well as setting up 8 practical nurse training centers with help from NAPNES & a grant from W. K. Kellogg Foundation when no formal training was available. What began as 62 hours of training has evolved into a year-long program with 30 practical nursing programs being offered at community colleges, universities, and career centers in Michigan today.

Through the years, MLPNA has been providing continuing education to LPNs and other healthcare personnel. Association & District sponsored Seminars are held in the Fall and Spring each year. In June, MLPNA holds their Annual Business Meeting selecting a different part of the state each year. Continuing Education is included during this three-day event.

MLPNA was formed by practical nurses that banded together more than 60 years ago to elevate and maintain high standards of practical nursing. And today is recognized as the voice for LPNs in Michigan and continues: “To actively promote, support and protect the profession of practical nursing, by continually striving for the expansion and improvement of skills, educational progress, and the utilization of LPNs in all areas of health care”.

OUR OBJECTIVE IS

To promote the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) as an integral part of the health care team concerned with meeting the health care needs of all people.

To accomplish this objective the Association shall:

  1. Establish standards and maintain a code of ethics for LPNs;
  2. Maintain an involvement with all regulation and legislation, which affect the health care of the public;
  3. Serve as the official voice of LPNs in Michigan and maintain liaison with all groups involved with health care;
  4. Promote Practical Nursing education and provide and support continuing education opportunities for all LPNs;
  5. Promote membership in the Association through programs beneficial to membership.
